At The Christmas Attic It's Always Christmas

The Christmas Attic is in an 18th Century warehouse situated one block from the Potomac River in Old Town Alexandria. It is right next to the street known as Captains Row because of all the sea captains homes there.

Originally the building was used for tabacco. When the Christmas Attic opened there 27 years ago, the building still had dirt floors. It is constucted with hand hewn beams, and the walls are four cords of brick thick.

Today you get a Christmas feeling as you enter the building and hear the sounds of a large disc music box playing holiday tunes, and watch as a toy train runs around the ceiling.

The Christmas Attic is mainly a Christmas store; but you will also find seasonal gifts there around Easter, Halloween, and other holidays. There is a large selection of collectables, including Radko ornaments and Department 56.

About three blocks away, just across from Market Square and next store to the visitors center, is the House in the Country shop. House in the Country is also in an 18th century building, although this one is a stately rowhouse. The House in the Country differs from The Christmas Attic in that its focus is country, with a little bit of Christmas. You will also find a little French Christmas and Italian Christmas there. Specialties include a selection of candles, and here you will find Boyds Bears.

Christmas Attic and House in the Country are a family business. Fay Carter’s mom started the business part time in 1977 in a corner of the second floor and it grew to fill the entire building.

Fay joined her mom in 1979 working weekends while she was in high school, and then went on to open the family’s Virginia Beach store.

Today Fay and her sister Sherry are both active in the business. Why did their mom start the business back then? Because, of course, she loved Christmas.
