Alexandria
City Council consists of six Council members and a Mayor. They
are elected at-large for three-year terms. A special election
fills an in-term vacancy unless the vacancy occurs within six
months of the end of the term. The Mayor is chosen on a separate
ballot and presides over meetings as the ceremonial head of government.
The Mayor does not have the power to veto Council action and members
choose the person receiving the most votes in the election to
serve as Vice Mayor. The Vice Mayor performs the mayoral duties
in the absence or disability of the Mayor. The City of Alexandria
has a strong commitment to citizen participation and has many
citizen boards and commissions established by City Council. They
advise City Council on all major issues affecting the City. Position
vacancies are advertised in the local newspapers and through civic
associations. Dockets are available for the City Council, Planning
Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals and Boards of Architectural
Review. Alexandria is served by an array of transportation facilities,
including National Airport, the newly renovated Union Station,
Metrorail stations at Braddock Road, King Street, Eisenhower Avenue
and Van Dorn Street, and an extensive network of bicycle trails.
The city government operates its own mass transit system, the
DASH bus, connecting points of interest with local transit hubs.
